Other • Minimal custom OS vs minimal Linux on Raspberry Pi 5 for real-time SLAM cum Visual Feature Inferencing pipeline

I want to replace Raspberry Pi OS with something far more minimal on Raspberry Pi 5. The system will run SLAM and visual inference, fusing IMU, LiDAR, RGB camera, and barometer data and communicate with the FCU. My goals are:
  • No desktop or general-purpose services
  • Maximum CPU and memory availability for vision + inference
For the inferencing system, I intend to implement NCNN without the overhead of Python.
I had the thought of making a very minimal Linux system using Buildroot/Yocto. Please help me distinguish between fantasy and reality in this.
