Raspberry Pi OS • Troubles accessing root & creating new users on Rasp 5

Hello!

I just got a Pi 5.

I'm admittedly pretty new to using anything like this, never used Linux, etc. but I've been trying to set up a Peertube installation but have hit a bit of a snag.

Whenever I tried to create a new User and then add them to a sudo group, it would ask for a password in the Terminal, but typing keys did nothing. The cursor just sits there and blinks.

I gave up for an evening and decided to come back later, but now I have an additional problem: I don't have Root access. It tells me I have to have that to try the adduser command, and it didn't say that before. I tried su root and it then asks for a password. As before, I can't type in a Password. Typing seemed to do nothing, until I pushed Enter. After that I was able to type in the password I created the other day, but I get an additional error: MSU: Authentication Failure.

What is happening, and how do I fix this?
