Beginners • How do I change a read only Config.txt file?

Hi all,

I'm a complete noob here. Forgive me if this has been asked a million times but I've had a quick search of the forum and couldn't seem to find a solution to my problem.

I recently received a Pi and a case which has a M.2 hat. I've thrown in an SSD and followed the instructions which came with the case regarding activation. Yet all I keep getting is an error message in the config file which says the document is read only. If it's any help the instructions I'm following say to add the following in /boot/firmware/config.txt:

[all]
dtparam=pciex1

This it seems is all I need to do to activate the drive but I can't save any updates to the file. A quick Google search suggested it is possibly due to the fact that the Pi I received came with a pre-loaded OS which has been set to read only to extend the life and stability of the SD card. The problem is I can't seem to find any way to change this. My first thought was to buy another SD card and download the OS fresh. But if I don't need to buy a new card all the better.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there anything I can do to make config.txt read and write?

Thank you.
