General discussion • cant't remove/delete extra device under /media/pi

I have an extra device called RASPI-XFER that was the name of a USB device previously inserted into the USB port of a Raspberry Pi 4. All worked fine for a while. Then mysteriously, after the device was removed, it still showed up in file explorer - even after numerous reboots of the system. When I insert the previous USB device, there are now TWO devices listed under /media/pi - both with the same name. - which is causing major program issues. By reformatting the USB device (calling in rasp2), and reinserting it, both the old device (RASPI-XFER) and the new device (RASP2) show up - yet only the one (RASP2) is really active.

when I try to move the old device to trash, I get error message 'no permission' I've tried sudo umount, etc but I'm at a loss.

Two questions:
1) What would typically cause the Raspberry pi to retain the information of the old device under /media/pi?
2) How can I delete the old information?

Thank you in advance
