More geek than nerd. Never learned all vi commands by heart, never wished for knowing all vi commands by heart. Never had much interest in specs and benchmarks of the newest tech. Or, and this applies to the real nerd, in the oldest tech. For him (it's always a him but please let it be a her), tech is an interest in love.
Love tends to hold on. Letting go or accepting change is not a strong-point. Love must be conservative then and in keep of an instinctively averse attitude towards anything that may threaten it. This is a rather crude assumption on my part, but I tend to think it does hold some truth.
Now here's where geeks may become useful. Their tech love isn't so deep that it's blinding reality. Keeping track of the world of tech is done out of interest and enthusiasm. Not out of commercial necessity or out of fear of what may have to get changed or will even have to be labeled obsolete.
Why all this? Well, I got surprised when I answered a question on another board. In short, I mentioned some proven but not widely known technology as interesting and let's say it fell in the pretty cold water of an ice hole. And I wondered why that is. It's a guess really, but I blame the love.
