Raspberry Pi OS • Problems with X11, Chromium and EEPROM update

I was an early adopter of the Pi4B. It was a troublesome time for me, since I was still new to Linux but it was also fun to see things getting better the next two years. About six month ago I began to notice things breaking. For now raspios is in a state so bad that it can't fulfil it's job for occasional web browsing at my TV any more. My RPI4B is overclocked to 2100 Mhz with a fan for cooling. Video playback on YouTube was possible without dropping frames, with the browser add-on Enhancer for YouTube set up for h.264 1080p30.
The problems began when chromium was converted from a stand-alone package to a normal package with dependencies. Video playback was slow, but was fixed a few days later. Two month after that I noticed video playback being completely broken on X11 (chromium glitching all over the place after trying to play any video on any website) and still very bad on Wayland. Way to many frames get dropped even on resolutions as low as 360p. Now chromium doesn't glitch any more on X11 but video performance is unbearable. Meanwhile X11 is just broken and seems to be abandoned. I have screen tearing with or without xcompmgr, both in full screen and windowed mode, so I hardly switched over to Wayland permanently, but for now video playback in chromium is just way to bad to stay on RPI for much longer. This is sad! I loved my Pi as long as it was working for me. Even rpi-eeprom-update is completely broken, throwing errors on system start being unable to update the firmware.
A new, clean installation did not help.
