Official Display • Touchscreen stays black depending on versions of the 3B+ board

I am experiencing a weird issue, where the connected touchscreen stays black or works fine depending on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ board connected to it.

In more details:
I am using the same display (7" official touchscreen), the same SD card with the Rasberry Pi OS (newest 32-bit release with Desktop) and the same power supply on two Raspberry Pi 3B+ boards.
When I turn them on (one at the time, since the same SD, display and power supply is used), for one of them, the display shows the Desktop as expeced and everything is working fine. For the other, the display stays black, but I can logon using SSH and everything else seems to work fine as well.
For the one where the display stays black, `dmesg` shows no entry for tf5406, neither does `lsmod`.

I however noticed that on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ board, the versions printed are not the same. By version I am talking about the one marked in red in the picture bellow and reading 2.2

For the 3B+ where the display works, the marked version reads 4.2 and where the display does not work, it reads 2.2.

Since I have multiple 3B+ boards at hand, I tried it with other ones as well and got the following result:
Whenever I use a boad where the version is >4, the display works fine.
Whenever I use a board where the version is >4, the display stays black as described above.

Not sure if the version thing is related to the issue with the display, but if anyone has information or an idea why the display stays black or what the printed version signifies, this would realy be appreciated.
