So I bought the new official USB Hub from Raspberry Pi and it's not as reliable as expected.
My Pi Setup:
- Pi 5 8GB
- Official 27w power supply
- Raspberry Pi OS running off a good SanDisk microSD card
- Headless, networked via ethernet
- Sole purpose is light network storage - speed doesn't matter to me
- 2x UGREEN M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosures, each with 4TB drive https://amzn.asia/d/52uMewK
- 3x SanDisk 512GB Ultra Dual Drives https://amzn.asia/d/4SnoQpS - these are temporary, but required for the time being.
Previously, I've used this USB setup to accommodate the 5x drives:
- UGREEN USB Hub 4 ports https://amzn.asia/d/4SnoQpS
- Powered via separate power supply (20w UGREEN)
With this UGREEN hub setup it's been fine, but maybe once every couple of weeks when I'm writing files to one of the disks, the whole thing disconnects and none of the drives are visible - a reboot does not resolve. I have to physically turn off the power outlets for the Pi and USB Hub power supplies, then turn them back on.
When I saw the new official Raspberry Pi USB Hub, I went and bought it immediately - both because I prefer to have the "official" accessory, and also because I hope to avoid these intermittent connection issues. I know it takes power, so I also bought an official Official RPi 15W (5V/3A) power supply. I chose this because even though it's only 15W it matches the 5V/3A listed by the USB Hub. The official 27W doesn't seem to match this.
But now the connection issues are 10x worse. Almost anytime I try to write anything to a disk, it will just cut out and none of the drives are visible and I need to physically unplug from the outlet and replug to resolve.
Is it me? Am I the problem? I am happy to buy any power supply/USB hub combo that will accommodate.
