General discussion • How will Chromium continue adblocking after Manifect V2 breaks uBlock Origin?

uBlock Origin, which is installed on Chromium by default on Pi OS, will soon stop functioning from the Chrome Web Store.
Here is a screenshot from a Chrome Canary build showing uBlock Origin not being installable due to it depending on features in Manifest V2.

Google is demanding this change to cripple adblockers and get more revenue.
What will the Pi OS maintainers do? Nothing immediate needs to be done, and there is some time (on the scale of months) to plan a workaround.
  1. Keep V2 support in the PiOS Chromium source code for as long as possible, and distribute uBlock Origin with an apt package. The apt package part is already done by Debian. I imagine this will be done by many people on the x86 side of things - fork Chromium to keep Manifest V2 alive for the next few years.
  2. Without browser source code changes, it seems possible to extend Manifest V2 availability until June 2025 through an addition to the Preferences file, as shown here. This ought to only require tweaks to rpi-chromium-mods, and would buy more time to find a more permanent solution.
  3. Drop uBlock Origin and switch to a Manifest V3 adblocker. Switching to uBlock Origin Lite is the pathway the author suggests to most users here in the FAQ, although it is noted that uBlock Origin Lite has fewer capabilities.
